Arterial blood pressure changes constantly over the course of a cardiac cycle. * The blood pressure is always given in the form of two values: * The highest pressure in the cycle is called systolic blood pressure. It is formed when the heart muscle contracts and the blood is pushed into the vessels. * The lowest is diastolic blood pressure, which occurs when the heart muscle has fully expanded and the heart is filled with blood. * Blood pressure fluctuations are normal. Even with a repeat measurement, considerable differences can occur between the measured values. One-off or irregular measurements therefore do not provide any reliable information about the actual blood pressure.
